When launching a major project like St. Paul’s new hospital it’s helpful to remind people of your major milestones. You can use a timeline design to do just that.

Our timeline design celebrated St. Paul’s 125th and touched on several of their firsts — state-of-the-art equipment; break-through medical procedures; pioneering AIDS treatments and stem cell firsts.

Their vision for the future will yield many more. How? Your financial support is key and reinforcing their track record motivates donors to open their wallets.

Various teams at St. Paul’s Foundation have worked with Far & Wide on a number of different projects, and in every case we have not been disappointed. Great ideas, great creative, and easy to work with on timelines that are not always so forgiving. Truly appreciate the level of professionalism and expertise that Kelly and her colleagues bring to every project we have shared.

University appeals raise billions annually for universities across North America. In 2014, Canadians gave $18.5 billion to the university appeal of their choice. In 2015 U.S. colleges raised $40.3 billion. The UBC Blue & Gold university appeal is the most extensive fundraising campaign for students in UBC’s 104-year history.

Our infographic for this UBC appeal campaign was a snapshot of where your donations went and what they accomplished. And those are no small accomplishments — $202.73 million last year which created 113 new scholarships; provided financial support to 5,752 UBC students; and funded 282 new research projects.

UBC sent us a list of numbers and turned us loose.

Result? An infographic that’s a super-quick read and shows you where the money goes; who it’s benefited; and the contributions UBC students have made to the world. Nice. And concise.

Students are at the heart of what we do. Ultimately, we want to ensure that more students get access to the best possible education without overwhelming financial concerns. Our Blue & Gold Campaign for Students goes a long way to helping achieve this and demonstrates the positive impact donor support has on our community.

The Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) are an iconic piece of our Pacific Northwest identity. We care about the well-being of these endangered killer whales.

Take a ferry trip from Vancouver to Victoria and you may be lucky enough to see them cruising through their critical habitat in search of the 1,400 Chinook salmon this pod needs to find each and every day.

These endangered killer whales have been in these waters forever. Now they need our help.

We were approached by the Galiano Island Conservancy to design, illustrate and produce this info-graphic communications piece. They wanted to cover all the key take-away points and keep the copy brief. We assisted with the research, edited their supplied copy and augmented the narrative with some additional, engaging story-telling.

The challenge with these info-graphics is keeping text and detail to a minimum while touching on all the salient points.

When this piece was produced in the fall of 2019 the SRKW numbered 73. As of late January 2020 their numbers dropped by one with the apparent loss of L41 – a large bull, believed to be born in 1977.

Please download our info-graphic to learn more about these magnificent threatened marine mammals and find out what you can do to help.

We have been very happy with the services Ian and Kelly and the info-graphics team have provided. The end result is very eye-catching, and serves our purposes perfectly. The production process was collaborative throughout, and they have been very responsive to our input and requests for edits. We have every intention of using their services again for future info-graphics!

Technical Drawing https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/technical-drawing/ Fri, 29 Nov 2019 00:39:33 +0000 https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/m-a-stewart-sons-product-guide-copy/ The post Technical Drawing appeared first on Info-graphics.

A technical drawing is worth a thousand words, wouldn’t you agree?

Structural engineers refer to tables constantly for specifications such as beam spans and loads. But nothing’s as immediately comprehensible as a technical drawing that clearly shows how those specifications are detailed.

Is your beam specified by length overall, or open, unsupported span? Check the diagram and you’ll understand immediately.

These cutaway diagrams were drawn to illustrate Macmillan Bloedel’s parallel strand lumber (PSL) which they trademarked Parallam. Unlike dimensional lumber, these PSL posts and beams could be very accurately rated for loads and spans.

Our illustrations visually isolated the location and application of the PSL member. This let builders and engineers clearly identify the relevant portion of the specification tables they needed to refer to.

Our ACT NOW infographic was part of the 2019 gala fundraiser hospital campaign which reached an incredible milestone of $43,680,000 towards the ACT NOW campaign. This level of financial support represents 87% of the hospital campaign’s $50 million goal.

This infographic was given to high-value donors in one-on-one appeals for their support. It gave them a concise snap shot of the reasons the new Acute Care Tower (ACT) was needed. Reasons like seismic instability (a real challenge when living on the fault line), obsolete and deficient infrastructure, and increasing pressure on service levels because of the aging demographic in the community.

Richmond Hospital could have gone into extensive detail about all of these issues. Instead they opted for this concise, illustrated, short-copy alternative because it’s easier to comprehend. And once you have that understanding, it’s easier to open your wallets and provide support.

In addition to the infographic we also created the ACT NOW branding.

We’ve worked on Richmond Hospital’s fundraising campaigns since 2012. During that time we’ve helped them achieve some other record-setting donation levels like the $1.3 million gala fundraiser in 2015.

Lime & Moon Illustrated Recipe https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/lime-and-moon-illustrated-recipe/ Wed, 27 Nov 2019 23:46:18 +0000 https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/info-graphic-design-copy/ The post Lime & Moon Illustrated Recipe appeared first on Info-graphics.

When our old friends at Lime & Moon Pie Company approached us to create an illustrated recipe super-graphic, we salivated at the opportunity.

Chris and Stanka had a general idea of what they wanted, but relied on us to realize their vision. Our illustrator, Kelly Brooks, did the original illustrations while working out the design and layout. Her illustrated recipe was tested on Chris and Stanka, tweaked a few times, then we coordinated the large format printing, mounting and installation.

End result? A visual treat that evoked the home-made goodness of grandma’s kitchen. Mission accomplished.

By using original drawings you avoid the ‘sameness’ of stock images. When you embrace the high-touch, low-tech quality of original illustrations and you strike a chord with an audience craving proof that we can still function without technology forcing its way into every aspect of our lives.

tiny thumbnail images used for street banners
Tiny thumbnail images drawn with ballpoint pen on bond paper. The texture created by the ink wicking along the paper fibers gave the enlarged street banners a unique hand-drawn quality.

We often put pen to paper to create unique, hand-drawn images like the ones we used for Commercial Drive street banners. Enlarging the tiny, thumbnail-sized originals to street banner size, created great coarse details where the ink wicked along the paper fibres.

Honey Bee infographic https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/honey-bee-facts/ Fri, 08 Nov 2019 21:21:15 +0000 https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/info-graphic-design-copy/ The post Honey Bee infographic appeared first on Info-graphics.

Yes, we keep honey bees. Can’t be designing and illustrating all the time! So we created this honey bee infographic loaded with honey bee facts.

The hives we keep on Galiano Island in British Columbia’s Gulf Islands have opened our eyes to the secret life of bees. And, so doing what we do, we just had to share some of those insights with you.

First we created a large format poster that was loaded with honey bee facts. Then we condensed all that info onto a single letter page info-graphic. We developed a custom script that loads the right format of web images. We produced an inter-active micro site. All with the focus on the single topic of honey bees. Why not? They’re pretty cool.

Our infographics for honey bees was also a spring board for infographics on other threatened or endangered species. The work we did about the Southern Resident Killer Whales is a good example. And we have more in the works — one for Rockfish conservation and another for the Pacific Herring which support so many other species at risk such as most of the Pacific Northwest’s salmon runs.

It’s so great when your efforts help make a difference to the health and well-being of other creatures sharing this planet.

So your products are better than the competition’s. How much better? Based on verifiable data, these calculator wheels show you exactly how much better.

Our calculator wheels for Scott Paper calculates the reduction in energy use, landfill waste, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions for 5 of Scott Paper’s EcoLogo certified tissue products compared to industry standard products. UL Environmental Services provided the research data for this project. The back of the calculator also details the rewards to purchasers through environmental stewardship programs such as LEED, BOMA, EPA and Green Hotel Association.

See the reduction in environmental impacts of hemp garments compared to conventionally grown cotton (arguably the most environmentally damaging crop in the world). Or calculate the reduction in the solid waste stream for compostable produce trays compared to conventional PET plastic produce trays.

I am so impressed with this piece, I think we should have it on the hemptown.com “marketing resources” page. I was proud to include it in the package to Logotex yesterday. Scott felt pretty good about it too. Thanks again. The stuff looks great.

Illustrated Instructions & Procedure Guides https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/illustrated-instructions-procedure-guides/ Thu, 07 Nov 2019 00:46:17 +0000 https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/canadian-wind-energy-print-copy/ The post Illustrated Instructions & Procedure Guides appeared first on Info-graphics.

Easy as 1, 2, 3. We have created illustrated instructions and procedure guides for everything from installing an outboard motor bracket to putting on a condom.

This little business card sized 3 panel brochure for Womyns’Ware in Vancouver gave clearly illustrated instructions on the dos and don’ts of proper use of a condom. If we can provide clear instructions on this subject matter, we’re pretty confident we can do the same for even less touchy subjects.

Whether it’s prophylactics or procedure guides for website content management, the key is to take nothing for granted. Clearly describe every step of the way. And make sure your illustrated procedures actually match what you’re describing. This is a critical part of a good customer experience.

Harvard Business Review describes the truth about customer experience as the “bigger—and more important—picture: the customer’s end-to-end journey”.

Did you cut your hand trying to wrestle open the plastic package? Does the product you unwrapped actually work? Are the instructions clear? Do the images actually match what you’re describing? These last 2 items are as important to a good customer experience as the first 2. Let’s make sure we get it right. And remember, it’s never too late to reassess the product documentation you already have. Perhaps it could be better. All these improvements improve your bottom line through improved customer experience.

Software manuals, or other subject matter — it’s the same basic approach.

Got a procedural challenge? We can help.

I have to admit you guys did a great job considering the raw material ;o)

Exploded View Diagrams https://info-graphics.ca/portfolio/exploded-view-diagrams/ Tue, 28 Feb 2017 01:25:25 +0000 https://info-graphics.ca/?p=1011 The post Exploded View Diagrams appeared first on Info-graphics.

Exploded view diagrams can bring to mind high-tech computer generated images. But sometimes high-touch is a better option than high-tech.

That was the case with the cut-away exploded view of these hand-crafted boots.

To reinforce the custom-built, one-of-a-kind craftsmanship that went into each pair, we opted for a hand-drawn exploded view that detailed the quality of construction.

And to reinforce the tactile, high-touch quality we opted to print these on chip board rather than a fine printing paper.

The result? A truly unique marketing companion piece for these top-quality, hand-made biker boots.

But just because it’s hand-drawn, doesn’t mean we sacrificed clarity or detail. We showed everything from top-stitching down to hob nails. The ability to look at a product and create an accurate, detailed image is arguably becoming a lost art, but it’s alive and well with our in-house illustrators.

Occasionally those quickie sketches don’t need to be polished at all like you see in this ‘back-of-the-envelope’ example I texted to a friend struggling with an August wasp infestation.
